Where Is Antoinette Forbes? A D.C. Mother Vanished, Leaving Her Life Behind

EDITOR’S NOTE: At the time of publication, authorities have not publicly identified Antoinette Forbes’s former partner, Russell Ashford, as a suspect in her disappearance, nor has he been charged with any crime connected to her disappearance. On September 4, 2026, 53-year-old Antoinette Forbes disappeared from Washington, D.C.

More than two weeks later, her family is still asking the same question:

Where is Antoinette?

The Metropolitan Police Department says Forbes was last seen in the 3200 block of Nebraska Avenue NW. Police describe her as an Asian woman, approximately 5 feet 2 inches tall and 115 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Authorities have not released a description of the clothing she was wearing when she disappeared. 

But it is what Forbes apparently didn’t take with her that has made her disappearance especially concerning to the people who know her.

According to friends and local reporting, Forbes’s phone, wallet and keys were found at her home. Her car remained there.

So did her dog.

And, most importantly to those closest to her, Forbes disappeared from the life of her 10-year-old son.

Her family and friends say that simply doesn’t make sense.

“She Would Never Walk Out on Her Son”

Those who know Forbes describe her as a devoted mother whose son is at the center of her life.

Friends have also described a woman with a successful professional career, a love of art, clothing and travel, and a life she enjoyed.

Her sister, Aileen Forbes, and longtime friends have repeatedly said they do not believe Antoinette would voluntarily abandon her child or simply walk away from her life.

That belief does not establish what happened to her.

But it explains why the people who love her became alarmed so quickly.

Police continue investigating, while family and friends have organized efforts to keep Antoinette’s face and name before the public.

A Troubling History Before Her Disappearance

There is another part of Antoinette Forbes’s story that cannot responsibly be ignored.

Her former partner and the father of her son, Russell Ashford, previously assaulted her.

This is not an allegation arising from her disappearance.

It is documented history.

According to court records reported by The Washington Post, police responded to a domestic violence incident at a Chevy Chase, Maryland, home in June 2021. Forbes suffered extensive injuries, including fractures to her face and jaw, damage to her eye, a broken finger and a concussion.

Ashford subsequently pleaded guilty in connection with the assault. 

Years later, Forbes was still living with its consequences.

Courtroom audio obtained by local news organizations captures Forbes describing permanent injuries and discussing her fear of Ashford.

During a July 2026 court hearing — less than two months before she disappeared — Forbes told the court that Ashford’s physical presence could make her feel afraid. She also disputed the characterization of the 2021 violence as an isolated event. 

That history understandably attracts attention now that Forbes is missing.

It does not, however, establish who is responsible for her disappearance or even establish that a crime caused it.

D.C. police have not publicly named Ashford as a suspect.

Both facts can exist at the same time.

The history of domestic violence is relevant.

And there is currently no public evidence establishing Ashford’s involvement in Forbes’s disappearance.

Ashford Is in Custody — But Not for Antoinette’s Disappearance

Ashford was arrested in Pennsylvania after Forbes disappeared, but the reasons for that arrest are separate from the missing-person investigation.

Authorities accused him of violating probation stemming from the earlier assault case.

Pennsylvania authorities subsequently filed additional weapons charges after investigators allegedly discovered firearms connected to him. Those weapons allegations are separate criminal matters and have not been connected publicly to Forbes’s disappearance. 

Ashford has not been charged in connection with Antoinette’s disappearance.

That distinction is crucial.

An arrest occurring during a missing-person investigation can easily create an assumption of guilt, particularly when there is a documented history of domestic violence between the people involved.

But suspicion is not evidence.

Until investigators establish otherwise, Antoinette Forbes remains a missing woman whose fate is unknown.

Investigators Have Searched Her Home

Police have continued working at Forbes’s Northwest D.C. residence.

Crime-scene investigators were seen returning to the property and removing bags of evidence as part of the investigation. Authorities have not publicly explained what was collected or whether any of it indicates that a crime occurred. 

That distinction matters as well.

Collecting evidence during a missing-person investigation does not, by itself, mean police have determined that someone was harmed.

It means investigators are searching for answers.

Antoinette’s family has also asked residents of neighborhoods including Tenleytown, Spring Valley, Wesley Heights, Friendship Heights and areas near American University to examine doorbell and security-camera footage from September 4 through September 7.

Sometimes the smallest detail can matter in a missing-person investigation.

A person walking down a street.

A vehicle passing a camera.

Something that seemed completely ordinary at the time.

Her Son Is Now With Family

There has also been an important development involving Antoinette’s 10-year-old son.

A Montgomery County judge granted a member of Forbes’s family emergency custody of the child on September 18.

Ashford had separately sought emergency custody after Forbes disappeared, but the judge denied that request while Ashford remained incarcerated in Pennsylvania.

The judge emphasized that the emergency custody ruling was not a determination of Ashford’s guilt or fitness as a parent.

Forbes’s son is therefore with members of her family while the search for his mother continues.

The Danger of Turning a Missing Woman Into a Mystery

Cases like Antoinette’s quickly attract speculation.

People examine relationships.

They study photographs.

They search social media.

They construct timelines and theories.

True crime audiences have become extraordinarily skilled at turning fragments of information into narratives.

Sometimes those narratives are correct.

Sometimes they are catastrophically wrong.

Right now, the most important fact about this case is also the simplest:

Antoinette Forbes is missing.

She is not merely the former partner of a man with a violent history.

She is not simply the subject of another mysterious disappearance.

She is a mother, sister, friend and colleague whose family wants her home.

Her loved ones have spent more than two weeks living without knowing where she is or what happened after September 4.

That uncertainty deserves more attention than any unproven theory.

Someone May Know Something

The Metropolitan Police Department continues asking for the public’s assistance.

Antoinette Forbes is 53 years old, 5 feet 2 inches tall and approximately 115 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen September 4 in the 3200 block of Nebraska Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. 

Her family continues searching.

Her friends continue speaking her name.

And somewhere between the last confirmed moments of Antoinette’s ordinary life and the realization that she was gone, there may be an answer.

Until evidence establishes what happened, speculation cannot fill that space.

But attention can.

Someone may have seen Antoinette.

Someone may remember a vehicle.

Someone may have security footage they never thought mattered.

Someone may know something they have not yet told police.

More than two weeks after Antoinette Forbes disappeared, the question remains:
