In December 2016, the disappearance of 19-year-old Sarah Stern from Neptune City, New Jersey, captured national attention. At first, investigators believed they were dealing with a missing person case. When Sarah’s car was discovered abandoned on a bridge over the Shark River, many feared she may have taken her own life or chosen to disappear voluntarily.
The truth, however, was far more tragic.
What began as a mystery soon evolved into one of New Jersey’s most shocking murder cases, revealing a crime driven by greed and committed by individuals Sarah had known for years. Even more remarkable was the fact that despite the absence of a recovered body, investigators were able to secure convictions through witness testimony, recorded confessions, and extensive investigative work.

Who Was Sarah Stern?
Sarah Stern was born in 1997 and grew up in Neptune City, New Jersey. Friends described her as artistic, creative, and independent. She attended Neptune High School and later studied at Brookdale Community College, where she pursued interests in art and media production.
Sarah’s life had not been without hardship. Years before her disappearance, she lost her mother to cancer, a loss that deeply affected her and her family. Despite this tragedy, those who knew her remembered a young woman who continued pursuing her goals and maintaining close relationships with friends.
Nothing about her behavior in the days leading up to her disappearance suggested that she intended to vanish without warning.
A Missing Person Investigation Begins
On December 3, 2016, Sarah’s car was found abandoned on the Route 35 Bridge connecting Neptune and Belmar, New Jersey. The vehicle’s location immediately raised concerns that she may have entered the river below. Search teams began looking for signs of Sarah, while investigators worked to determine what had happened.
Family members insisted that Sarah’s disappearance made little sense. They described her as someone who would not simply leave without contacting loved ones.
As days turned into weeks, theories circulated throughout the community. Some believed Sarah had run away. Others feared suicide. Investigators, however, continued examining evidence and interviewing those closest to her.
Eventually, the focus shifted toward two people who had known Sarah since childhood.
The Friends at the Center of the Investigation
Authorities began investigating Liam McAtasney and Preston Taylor, both longtime friends of Sarah’s.
According to prosecutors, McAtasney had become aware that Sarah had access to money connected to her late mother’s estate. Investigators later argued that financial gain became the motive for a plan that escalated into murder.
The case took a dramatic turn when Taylor agreed to cooperate with investigators. He ultimately admitted his role in helping dispose of evidence after Sarah’s death and provided information about what had happened.
His testimony would become one of the most important pieces of the prosecution’s case.
The Recording That Changed Everything
One of the most unusual aspects of the Sarah Stern investigation involved a childhood friend named Anthony Curry.
Curry became suspicious after conversations with McAtasney and eventually began working with law enforcement. Using recording equipment supplied by investigators, he secretly captured conversations in which McAtasney discussed Sarah’s death.
Those recordings became critical evidence.
The conversations provided investigators with details that prosecutors argued only the killer would have known. What had once appeared to be a difficult case with no body and limited physical evidence suddenly became much stronger.

The case became an example frequently cited by legal experts when discussing successful “no-body” homicide prosecutions.
The Trial
McAtasney’s trial attracted significant media attention throughout New Jersey and beyond.
Prosecutors argued that greed was the driving force behind the crime. They presented evidence that the plan originated from discussions about obtaining Sarah’s money and evolved into a scheme that ultimately ended in her death.
The defense challenged aspects of the prosecution’s narrative and questioned whether recorded statements should be taken literally. However, jurors ultimately found the evidence compelling.
In February 2019, McAtasney was convicted of murder, robbery, conspiracy, and related charges.
Sentencing
Following his conviction, McAtasney was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, plus additional prison time on related charges.
Taylor, who cooperated with investigators and testified against McAtasney, received an 18-year prison sentence for his role in the crime.
For Sarah’s family, the verdict provided accountability, though the absence of her remains meant that some questions would never be fully answered.
Why the Case Captivated the Nation
The Sarah Stern case resonated with people across the United States for several reasons.
First, it involved a victim who appeared to have been targeted by people she had trusted for years. Second, the investigation demonstrated how modern police work can solve a murder even when traditional evidence is limited.
